Abstract
Polymeric terpene resins are purified from inorganic halide impurities by contacting with a sequestering agent selected from hydroxycarboxylic acids, lactones, alkali metal or ammonium salts of hydroxy-carboxylic acids, polybasic acids or salts thereof, and separating therefrom. The polymers from terpenes such as a - and b -pinene, dipentene, limonene, a -terpene, myrcene, allo-ocimene, ocimene and D 3-carene and natural or artificial turpentine mixtures may be polymerized in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, preferably in a waterinsoluble diluent or solvent, optionally washed with water and/or dilute acid, and the sequestering agent added as a dilute (1%) water solution. Sequestering agents mentioned are citric acid, sodium, potassium and ammonium citrates, gluconic acid and sodium, potassium and ammonium gluconates, glucono delta and gamma lactone, ethylene diamine tetra- and tri-acetic acid and their sodium, potassium and ammonium salts, sodium tetraphosphate and mixtures thereof.
