Abstract

840,395. Gyroscopic apparatus. MINNEAPOLIS-HONEYWELL REGULATOR CO. July 3, 1957, No. 21044/57. Class 97(3). [Also in Group XXIV] Means for balancing the gimbals of a gyroscope consists of a container mounted on the gimbal and containing an object, such as a ball or a bubble, embedded in a thermoplastic material of substantially different density and means for heating the container to melt the thermoplastic material to allow the object to move. As shown, the rotor casing 34 is journalled in a housing 12, which is filled with a damping liquid which supports the weight of the casing. The rotor casing contains two similar cylindrical containers 70, 72 with their axes at right angles. Container 70 consists of a glass tube 74 surrounded by a heater wire or film 76. The tube is closed by plugs 78, 80 and contains a ball 84 embedded in thermoplastic material such as Wood's metal or a like eutectic mixture, or a thermoplastic resin. The gyroscope motor is driven by a three-phase supply feed into the casing by flexible leads of the kind described in Specification 812,875. The heating element 76, and a similar element surrounding container 72, are connected across two pairs of phase wires, each in series with a condenser. At the normal supply frequency, the reactance of the condensers is high and little current flows in the heating elements. When the rotor casing is to be balanced, an A.C. supply of higher frequency is fed in. At the higher frequency, the reactance of the condensers is less, while the reactance of the motor windings is greater, so that the current flows mainly in the heating circuit. The heat so generated melts the thermoplastic material, and the balls in the containers can be moved by gravity. The rotor casing is oriented so that the required container is vertical, and heating current is applied to the appropriate element for a time estimated empirically from the unbalance. The process is repeated with the second container vertical. The balls may be heavier or lighter than the thermoplastic material, and may be replaced by bubbles.
