Abstract

840,389. Pipe joints. EVERED & CO. Ltd. March 24, 1958 [March 22, 1957], No. 9382/57. Addition to 839,743. Class 99(1). In joint forming means for thermoplastic pipes 15, 16, e.g. of polyethylene or polyvinyl chloride, and of the kind comprising inner and outer sleeves 10, 11, the sleeve 10 being a tight fit in the pipes and forming with the sleeve 11 an annular passageway for reception of the pipes as a tight sliding fit therein, barrier rings 20 are provided in that part of the passageway or fusion zone 22, wherein fusion union between the pipes takes place, the inner boundaries of the rings being spaced radially from the outer face of the sleeve 10 so as to provide a passage for an inner layer 34 of pipe material into the zone 22, and the rings each affording ways situated radially outwardly of their inner boundaries for the passage of an outer layer 35 of pipe material into the zone 22. The rings 20 are in heat-receiving communication with the sleeve 11 so that when the latter is heated the end portions of the pipes are rendered fluent and readily divisible by the rings when the pipes are pushed axially into contact therewith. As shown, the sleeve 11, of brass or copper, comprises an outer tube 12 and a close-fitting, structurally separate, inner assembly including a centrally disposed inner ring 13 separated from inner tube elements 14 by annular recesses 25 for engagement by radially projecting lugs on the rings 20, the ring 13 and the elements 14 being retained against axial displacement relatively to the tube 12 by deformed end portions 31 of the tube which are pressed axially against the knurled or serrated end faces of the tube 14 thereby also preventing rotation of the latter. Openings 26 are formed in the tube elements 14 which become filled with pipe material rendered fluent. The sleeve 11 may be formed with indicator holes extending through the wall of the tube 12 and communicating with the recesses 25 or the openings 26. A temperature-indicating material may be provided on the tube 12. The sleeve 16, of brass or copper, is formed with a central, radially outwardly, projecting rib 33. In a modification, not shown, inner tubes are provided which are capable of being displaced in an axial direction within the tube 12 by end caps screw-threadedly mounted thereon.
