Abstract

840,308. Frequency modulation receivers. CANADIAN WESTINGHOUSE CO. Ltd. Dec. 29, 1958 [Jan. 22, 1958], No. 41869/58. Class 40 (5). A F.M. receiver receiving wide deviation signals includes a transmission path having a pass bandwidth which is narrower than the bandwidth of the received signals and is equal to twice the modulating frequency, and means to compress the deviation of the received signal so that it is not greater than twice the modulating frequency. The frequency compression reduces the noise power in the receiver when it is operated near the threshold level. The received signal is fed through R.F. stage 7, mixer 8 and I.F. amplifier 10 to a mixer 11 fed by a local oscillator 12. The output of mixer 11 is amplified and limited at 13, 14, the amplifier 13 including the narrow band transmission path, and the low-frequency output is obtained at 16 from a discriminator 15. A second output of discriminator 15 controls modulator 17 which is arranged to frequency-modulate oscillator 12 so that the deviation of the output of mixer 11 is reduced by the desired amount.
