Abstract

1 - (p - Aminophenethyl) - 4 - phenyl - 4 - alkoxycarbonylpiperidines of the general formula <FORM:0840006/IV(b)/1> (wherein R represents a C1-5 alkyl group) are prepared by treating the corresponding nitro compounds with hydrogen in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst, and, if desired, are treated with acids to form acid addition salts. 1 - (p - Nitrophenethyl) - 4 - phenyl - 4 - alkoxycarbonylpiperidines are prepared by refluxing the carbonates of the corresponding 1-unsubstituted compounds with p-nitrophenethyl bromide in ethanol in the presence of sodium bicarbonate. 4-Phenyl-4-methoxy-, isoamoxy- and propoxycarbonylpiperidine carbonates are prepared by reacting 1-p-toluenesulphonyl-4-phenyl-4-carboxypiperidine with the appropriate alcohols in the presence of concentrated sulphuric acid, treating the products with aqueous caustic soda and adding excess carbon dioxide.
