Abstract

A moulding composition having antistatic properties comprises a synthetic thermoplastic resin and 3% or more by weight of a watersoluble additive having a vapour pressure less than 760 mm. at 225 DEG C. and a dielectric constant greater than 5, the solubility of the resin in the additive being no more than 1% by weight, the additive being one or more of a hydroxyalkylated alkylene diamine, wherein the alkylene radicals contain from 2 to 6 carbon atoms, a hydroxyalkylated polyethylene polyamine wherein the polyethylene polyamine radicals contain 2 to 4 ethylene groups, or a polyalkanolamine containing no cyclic groups and at least two hydroxyalkyl groups, all hydroxyalkyl groups containing from 2 to 8 carbon atoms, or a quaternary ammonium salt of any of the aforementioned additives. The resin may be polystyrene, polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride, polymethyl methacrylate, a polyamide, polyacrylonitrile, a polyfluoroethylene, polytrifluoromonochloroethylene, polybutadiene, or a halogenated polystyrene, mixtures thereof or copolymers derived from corresponding monomers. Preferred additives are totally hydroxypropylated, di - hydroxyethylated and mono-hydroxyethylated tri-hydroxypropylated ethylene diamine, trihydroxy-octylated hexamethylenediamine, pentahydroxyethylated diethylene triamine, triisopropanolamine, N-butyl diethanolamine and quaternary ammonium salts thereof. Colouring matter such as phthalocyanine blue may also be incorporated. The compositions may be made by dissolving the additive in a solvent which is a non-solvent for the resin employed, e.g. isopropyl alcohol, mixing the solution with the resin in comminuted form, and evaporating the solvent. Examples describe the bulk polymerization of a solution of additive and azo catalyst in styrene.
