Perforations 2 in tubes 1 enclosing the active material of a battery are filled with porous sintered synthetic material, for example polyvinyl chloride. The perforations may be of greater diameter on the inside than on the outside, or they may be shaped to give the inner wall of the tube the shape of a grater. The interior of the tube may be lined with the porous material which may also fill the perforations. The tubes may be made by covering a flat perforated sheet with a layer of the sintered material and rolling the composite sheet into tubular form.
