Abstract
839,486. Electric tests. HOUSTON OIL FIELD MATERIAL CO. Inc. June 17, 1957, No. 19061/57. Class 37. Apparatus for locating metal objects in a well bore (Fig. 1) consists of a coil 16 forming part of the tuning circuit of an oscillator 20, mounted on a highly. permeable core 14 and situated in the field of two magnets 10 and 12, and is enclosed in a non-magnetic casing 8 and may be separated therefrom if desired by an electrostatic shield 26. The magnetic field is such that it is sufticient to saturate the core. The oscillator is fed with a D.C. current by means of cable 9 which also serves to suspend the casing. At the surface, the output of oscillator 20 is inductively coupled to a receiver and is then mixed with the output of another oscillator and the radio frequency is filtered away to give a heterodyne beat output of about 50-1000 cycles. This frequency is measured and any departure from the norm as the apparatus is lowered into the well bore gives the required indication. A cathode-ray oscilloscope may be used for indication.
