Abstract

839,236. Securing railway rails. MILLS Ltd., Executors of J. June 1, 1956 [June 23, 1955; April 17, 1956], Nos. 18152/55 and 11592/56. Class 104 (2). A flange-footed railway rail is secured to a rail: seating on a railsupporting base or sleeper comprising one or more openings extending beneath the rail seating, the lower of which openings are formed by the upper part of the sleeper or by the rail supporting base, by one or more rail securing clips having interconnected upper and lower arms which exert a gripping pressure on the rail-supporting base or sleeper and the rail flange in a common vertical plane extending parallel to the rail length. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 2 acast iron base-plate 20 is formed with horizontal holes 24, 25 terminating beneath the adjacent edge portion of the rail seat 23. The upper and lower sides 26, 27 of the holes 24, 25 are, respectively, downwardly and upwardly inclined. The holes 24, 25 are of uniform width and are provided with a drainage hole 28. At the centre of the base-plate 20 there are provided shoulders 30 which extend upwards a distance greater than the thickness of the rail flange 29. The upper surface of the shoulders 30 is downwardly inclined away from the rail 22 to provide a recess 34 to hold a clip in the inoperative position. The rail 22 is held in position by a spring steel " C "-shaped clip 35, the lower arm 37 of which engages the upper surface 26 of the hole 24 or 25 and the upper arm 36 the rail flange 29. The clip 35 is retained in the railengaging position by a shoulder 44 formed by the edge of the rail seat 23 engaging the upper arm 36 of the clip 35. Convex faces 40, 42 are provided on the free ends of the clip arms 36, 37. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 4 and 5 the base-plate shoulders 30 are flat and-horizontal and do not extend appreciably above the rail flange 29 and the free end of the upper clip arm 36 is recessed on its underside to form an abutment 48 to engage side of the rail seat 23. In a further arrangement shown in Fig. 7, the clip is bent to a "U" and each arm is then bent to a " U " or "C" configuration so that the upper portion containing the bend 51 forms the upper clip arm. The base-plate may be formed integrally with the sleeper and the clips may be of laminated construction. A. packing-piece may be inserted between the upper clip arm and the rail flange. Specification 839,237 is referred to.
