Abstract

839,126. Programmed electric control systems. NORTH AMERICAN AVIATION Inc. Oct. 23, 1956 [Dec. 23, 1955], No. 32241/56. Class 40 (1). In a servomotor. circuit wherein control is effected by a digital error signal resulting from a comparison of a programmed digital input signal and a corresponding signal derived from a magnetic tape or other record driven by the motor, the digital error signal is first converted into analogue form and then combined with a fine control analogue signal derived from the tape pick-off. As shown, the servomotor M, Fig. 1, drives. through a fluid pressure system 89-41, a magnetic tape 3 on which is recorded a sine wave. Pick-off 1, 2 are disposed an odd number of quarter-wavelengths apart. Their outputs, after amplification and demodulation at 5, 6, are fed to respective flip-flops 7, 8 the outputs of which are combined in. a direction circuit 9 to produce a " distance " pulse over line 10 for each quarter wavelength traversed by the tape relative to the pick-offs, and associated " direction " pulses over line 11 corresponding to the direction of the relative movement of the tape. These pulses are compared in a reversible error counter 12 with the programmed distance and direction input pulses from a director 82. The resultant digital error (difference) signal is converted into analogue form at 13 (e.g. by summing resistors 14-17 in the case of a binary counter) and fed via an amplifier 39 to drive the motor M in the corrective sense. For fine control, Figs. 1, 7, push-pull sinusoidal outputs ΠA, ΠB taken from the demodulators 5, 6 are added algebraically in selected combinations. This is effected by gating the outputs ΠA, ΠB by diodes 66-69 according to the outputs of the flip flops 7, 8, to mechanize four logical equations as disclosed in the Specification, whereby the required analogue fine control voltage is fed over resistor 27 and added to the coarse error analogue step signal to provide a continuously varying control signal.
