Abstract

839,115. Road-vehicle spring-suspensions. GENERAL TIRE & RUBBER CO. Oct. 17, 1958 [Nov. 13, 1957], No. 33262/58. Class 108(2) The admission of pressure air to. and exhaust air from, pneumatic springs at respective ends of each axle 16, 18, of a semi-trailer is controlled by vehicle-height responsive valves 25, 26 and 27, the valves 26 and 27 being in parallel and together in series with the valve 25. The input air is derived from a pump 5 which feeds reservoirs 3, 4 between which is disposed a relief valve 7. The vehicle brake system is fed from the reservoir 3. The reservoirs 3 and 4 and the pump 5 are disposed on the tractor vehicle 1. Each valve 25, 26 and 27 is of identical construction, and comprises a check valve 35 preventing return flow to the inlet passage 28 and a valve 39 which in its closed position seats at 36 in the valve housing. The valve 39 also seats on the open end of a tubular valve element 50 which is movable up and down under the action of a lever 56 which acts through gears 55, 57, and a rack portion 46. The outer end of the lever 56 is pivotally connected to a link which is rigid with the respective axle. The position of the latter link may be adjusted vertically with respect to the axle. On upward movement of the lever 56, the valve element 50 is thus caused to rise and lift the valve 39 to permit air to flow from the inlet 28 to the outlet 29. On lowering of the lever 56, the valve element 50 is lowered, and air can pass from the outlet 29 via the interior bore of the valve element 50, an orifice 51 and an outlet port 53. The inlet of the valves 26 and 27 is connected to the outlet 29 from the valve 25. The inlet to the valve 25 is connected to the conduit 67 leading to the reservoir 4. The outlet 29 of the valves 26 and 27 is connected to conduits 24 leading to the air springs 22. The connecting link between the outer end of the lever 56 of the valve 25 and the axle 16 is one inch less than the corresponding links associated with the valves 26 and 27, when the vehicle is in a normal position on level ground. Thus in the normal level of the vehicle, the valves 39 of each valve assembly 26 and 27 is closed while the corresponding valve 39 of the valve assembly 25 is open. Each spring 22 comprises a pair of pneumatic suspension units as described in Specification 818,604, the lower ends of which are mounted on a plate 20 rigid with the axle. The axle is connected by radius rods 13 to respective brackets 11 by a yieldable connection 12. It is not necessary for the valve 25 to have the orifice 51 leading to atmosphere.
