Abstract
838,858. Stoppering in vacuo. PIRRO, R. May 21, 1958 [Oct. 1, 1957], No. 16351/58. Class 125(2). A holder for bottles to be stoppered in vacuo comprises a base 1 and a vertically-reciprocable plate 2 having apertures fitting the bottles, the stoppers 5 being frictionally supported in sleeves 4 of such size that they can slide over the bottles and yet be supported by the plate 2. In operation, each filled bottle is stoppered and fitted with a sleeve 4 and the plate 2 is raised manually or otherwise, being retained in raised position by a stop. A bottle is then inserted in each aperture in plate 2, the bottles being suspended by the sleeves. The holder is inserted in a vacuum chamber and, upon evacuation, the pressure inside the bottles drives out the stoppers and the bottles drop on to base 1 being still engaged by plate 2. Dehydration or freeze-drying is then effected and the stop holding plate 2 is released by remote control so that the plate, the sleeves 4 and the stoppers drop, the latter sealing in the bottles. Upon breaking the vacuum in the chamber, ambient pressure forces the stoppers home and the sleeves are removed.
