Abstract
838,857. Vehicle wheel balance weights. HOFMANN, D. May 12, 1958 [May 25, 1957; Aug. 30, 1957; Oct. 22, 1957], No. 15094/58. Class 144 (1). A wheel balance weight consists of a body 4 whose cross-sectional periphery has a convex portion fitting the concave inner curve of the wheel rim and extending beyond the convex portion a portion engageable with another part of the wheel rim to prevent sliding of the weight round the concave curve of the rim; and a holding spring 5 having an inner portion interlockable with the body and an outer portion, fitting the convex outer curve of the rim, which extends from the inner portion around a circumferential edge of the rim. Interlocking of the spring and the body is by means of a safety catch 1 which may be formed by a " tongue " bent out of the plane of the inner portion of the spring to fit into a cavity 3 in the body, e.g. as in Fig. 1, or by bending the inner portion into a claw abutting a surface of the body, as in Fig. 6: the safety catch may also comprise a projection from the body (either integral with it or in the form of a cast-in pin) which fits into an aperture in the inner portion of the spring. The spring is of less circumferential extent than the body and is first attached to the rim, the weight being subsequently inserted between the rim and the inner portion of the spring, the latter being strained apart from its outer portion during insertion. In the form shown in Fig. 6 this operation is facilitated by the provision of an extra portion 9 of the spring and a pointed nose 10 on the body, and extraction of the weight is effected by the insertion of a tool into depressions 11 in the body located outside the circumferential extent of the spring.
