Abstract

Epoxide resins containing glycidyl ether groups are cured with compounds containing as sole functional groups two tertiary N atoms separated by an aliphatic chain of at least two C atoms, e.g. 1-di-isobutyl-amino-5-dimethyl-aminopentane, 1,5-dipiperidyl pentane or 1,7-dipiperidyl heptane. The resin and curing agent dissolved in solvents provide coating compositions which harden slowly, e.g. in about twelve days, to transparent lacquers which are chemically and mechanically resistant and provide excellent electrical insulation. 100 parts of the polyglycidyl ether obtained by reacting epichlorhydrin and 2,21-p,p1-hydroxy diphenyl propane are dissolved in 185 parts of a mixture of toluene, propanol and ethylene glycol in the ratio 7:3:4 and 25 parts 1,7-di-piperidyl heptane are added. 50 parts of the mixture are added to a further 100 parts of the ether resin dissolved in the same solvent mixture to yield a lacquer. In Example 2 methyl epichlorhydrin is reacted with 2,21-p,p1-hydroxyphenylpropane and the resulting glycidyl ether mixed at 130 DEG C. with 1,5-dipiperidyl pentane and poured into a mould for 4 1/2 hours at room temperature, followed by 1 hour's hardening at 100 DEG C.
