Abstract

838,550. Making pipes for propulsion nozzles of rocket motors. ARMSTRONG SIDDELEY MOTORS Ltd. March 28, 1958 [April 4, 1957], No. 10986/57. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). [Also in Group XXVIII] Stamping.-A method of making tubes of truncated wedge-shaped cross-section which are to be welded together side by side whilst arranged in a circle and reinforced by wire helically wound under tension to form the nozzle pipe of a jet motor, comprises simultaneously compressing in two intersecting directions a tube of circular cross-section to form the desired truncated wedge-shaped cross-section while supporting the inside of the tube with an extrudable material. Each tube made by the method has a portion 20 of four-sided uniform cross-section (Fig. 3), a portion 24 of deepened ribbed cross-section (Fig. 7) which forms the throat of the nozzle and a portion 25 the crosssection of which widens from the deep ribbed section of the throat portion to a shallow ribbed cross-section (Fig. 4). The tube is further stiffened by providing its walls 21a and 22a with a convex curvature (Fig. 8). Apparatus for carrying out the method comprises a bed plate 27 and a movable head 28. A longitudinally extending lower die 29 is bolted to the bed plate and on each side of the die and slidably mounted on guides 33 on the base plate is a spring-loaded die block 35. A punch 44 for coacting with the lower die 29 is carried by the head 28 such that when the head descends and urges the punch towards the lower die the blocks 35 are forced inwardly by the wedge action of the arms 52 of the head and the required cross-sectional configuration is imparted to the tube. The tube of circular cross-section initially placed in the apparatus is filled with a paraffin wax having a melting point of 110‹ to 115‹ F.
