Abstract

Polyolefins are stabilized against heat, light, and loss of viscosity, by incorporating therein a compound of the formula RxSn(SR1)4-x where R is a monovalent C1 to C18 hydrocarbon radical selected from alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl, X is an integer from 1 to 3, and -SR1 a monovalent radical selected from hydrocarbon radicals or hydroxy-, esterified hydroxy-, carboxy-, carboxyester and carboxyamide hydrocarbon radicals, and xanthates. The polyolefin may be high or low-pressure polyethylene or polypropylene. Exemplified compounds of the above formula are dibutyl tin dilauryl mercaptide, tributyl tin isopropyl xanthate, dibutyl tin dioctyl-thioclycolate, and tributyl tin thiobutyric dibutylamide. The compound may be incorporated in the polyolefin using heated mixing rollers.
