Abstract

838,208. Pulverulent, liquid or gaseous fuel furnaces; burning sulphur. CELLECO A.B. Sept. 19, 1958 [Sept. 24, 1957], No. 29998/58. Classes 51 (1) and 51(2). Pulverulent solid fuel, liquid or gaseous fuel is introduced with primary air at the bottom 2 of a furnace where it is incompletely burned with secondary air supplied tangentially at 3. Combustion is completed in a bed 8 of incombustible particles which are fluidized by the gases and small excess of air passing upwards through the grating 5 supporting the bed. The primary combustion chamber may be horizontal, the fluidized being supported by a grating in a vertical limb connected to the primary chamber, Fig. 2 (not shown). In a modification, Fig. 3, the fluidized bed particles are contained in a U-bend 10 connecting the primary combustion chamber 6 to the flue outlet. The furnace may be used for burning sulphur, crushed pyrites or other sulphitic minerals or for burning waste sulphite lye, the small excess of air used giving a high concentration of SO 3 or SO 2 .
