Abstract
837,868. Measuring optical properties photoelectrically. DEUTSCHE ERDOL-A.G. April 27, 1956 [April 30, 1955], No. 13066/56. Class 40(3). A substance on which optical data is required is placed between a polarizer and an analyser having periodic relative rotary movement about a light beam, the temperature of the substance is varied, and the emergent light intensity from the analyser is measured photoelectrically and recorded. Constant-intensity light from source A passed through polarizer E, the axial bore of temperature-varied chamber C containing test substance Q, and continuously rotating analyser F to photo-cell O whose output is fed via switch M to amplifier K and recorder L. At intervals the switch interrupts the photo-cell output and connects electric thermometer N via attenuator P to the amplifier. The light beam may be filtered before or after it passes through the test substance. The recording paper moves slowly relative to the analyser rotation and the form of the resultant traces as the substance cools indicates the effect of e.g. anistropy, Figs. 2-4 (not shown). Turbidity alone may be measured by interposing an analogous polarizer E<1> and removing polarizer E from the light path.
