Abstract
A film-forming synthetic resin composition comprises essentially a particulate vinyl fluoride polymer or copolymer in intimate admixture with at least one organic compound <FORM:0837839/IV (a)/1> where R is a divalent C2-7 hydrocarbon radical, of which 2 to 5 carbon atoms are in the ring. The copolymers are those derived from a predominant weight of vinyl fluoride copolymerized with another mono-ethylenic monomer such as hydrocarbons, e.g. ethylene, propylene, isobutylene and styrene; halogen-substituted olefins, e.g. vinyl chloride and bromide, 1,1-dichloro- or fluoro-ethylene, di- or tri-fluoro chloroethylene, tetrafluoroethylene, trifluoro propylene and difluoroisobutylene; vinyl esters, e.g. of formic, acetic, propionic, butyric, pivalic, benzoic, stearic and inorganic acids; alkenyl ethers, e.g. vinyl ethyl ether, tetrafluoroethyl allyl ether and vinyl dioxolane; vinyl ketones, e.g. methyl vinyl ketone; N-vinyl imides, e.g. N-vinyl-succinimide and -phthalimide; acrylic and methacrylic acids and such derivatives as esters, nitriles, amides, anhydrides and acid halides thereof, e.g. methyl, beta-hydroxyethyl, and allyl methacrylates, acrylonitrile and N-butyl methacrylamide; derivatives of maleic and fumaric acids, e.g. diethyl maleate and dimethyl fumarate; propenyl esters, e.g. allyl and isopropenyl acetates. Specified organic compounds of the above formula are: beta-propiolactone; beta, beta - dimethyl - beta - propiolactone; beta, beta - methylethyl - beta - propiolactone; gamma - butyrolactone; crotolactone; gamma valerolactone; beta - or alpha - methyl - gamma butyrolactone; alpha - beta - or alpha - gamma - dimethyl-gamma - butyralactone; alpha - ethyl - gamma-butyrolactone; gamma - n - caprolactone; alpha - alpha - gamma - trimethyl - gamma-butyrolactone; alpha - isopropyl - gamma-buryrolactone; gamma - n - heptolactone; delta - valerolactone; alpha - methyl - delta-valerolactone; delta - n - caprolactone and epsilon caprolactone. Examples describe in some detail the formation of films from polyvinyl fluoride and various lactones by a variety of techniques viz. extrusion into baths of first hot then cold white mineral oil and removal of oil and lactone with acetone; dispersion on a metal belt or plate and heating in an oven or hot silicone oil or by infra-red rays followed by volatilization of the lactone in a current of hot air; extrusion from a slotted hopper into a bath of cold water and volatilization of the lactone in a current of hot air. The preferred concentration of polyvinyl fluoride in the composition varies with the film-forming technique to be employed viz. 25-40% for extrusion into coalescing hot oil; 10-60% for extrusion on to a plate or belt and coalescing by heat; 20-85% for hot extrusion into a cold quench bath. Specification 605,445 is referred to.
