Abstract

837,756. Coiling. CROSS MANUFACTURING CO. (1938) Ltd. Sept. 5; 1958. No. 28550/58. Class 83 (4). A machine for coiling wire on a rotated mandrel by driven peripherally-grooved roller(s) co-operating therewith, the coiled wire being moved axially, and over the free end, of the mandrel by one surface of the groove, is characterized in that the groove of the, or each, roller is of V-section and the roller is frustoconically chamfered around one edge leading from the groove, the roller(s) being disposed so as to lie with its axis (or their axes) at an acute angle to the mandrel axis with the conical face of the chamfered edge in running contact with the mandrel and the side of the groove adjacent the chamfer facing the free end of the mandrel when it engages the wire. Two coiling rollers 4, mounted in vertically and horizontally adjustable heads 11, and a mandrel 3 are rotated by a motor 9 through changespeed gear 8 and differential gear 7. Each roller 4, which is inclined to the mandrel 3, has a peripheral V-groove 16 and the edge of the roller which is applied to the mandrel is frusto-conically chamfered at 19. A side 17 of the groove 16 presses radially of the mandrel on wire 20 and a side 18 of the groove 16 causes the wound wire to move axially of the mandrel 3. The disadvantages of a grooved roller 4a, Fig. 6, rotating on an axis parallel to the axis of a mandrel 3a are pointed out.
