Abstract
A catalyst used in reforming petroleum hydrocarbons, is prepared by commingling alumina (preferably a hydrate such as 65-95% alumina trihydrate, i.e. bayerite, randomite or gibbsite) in aqueous medium with a platinium group metal bromine or iodine compound (preferably H2PtBr6 but also, e.g. H2PtI6 and Pt di-, tri- and tetra-bromides or iodides), drying the resulting mixture, optionally heating to calcination temperature in an inert atmosphere (e.g. N2), and calcining in an oxidizing atmosphere (e.g. air). Preferably the finished catalyst contains 0.1-1.5% by weight Pt, and is formed by contacting the A Al2O3-H2PtBr6 slurry with H2S, before the drying operation. It is stated that compounds of other platinum group metals such as Rh, Pd or Ir, corresponding to the above-specified Pt compounds may be used in the invention; the catalyst base may contain minor amounts of other materials such as silica, iron and chlorine. The catalyst may be regenerated by contact with an oxygen-containing gas followed by reduction with free hydrogen. Specification 735,390 is referred to.
