Abstract
837,241. Slitting apparatus. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. Aug. 26, 1958 [Sept. 2, 1957], No. 27677/57. Class 31 (1). Tape-slitting apparatus comprises a balanced assembly of pairs of peripherally overlapping and co-operating cutter discs 1, 3, one disc 3 of each pair being flexible and of dished form with a cutting face 10 normal to the axis of the disc, and the other disc 1 of the pair being rigid and being maintained in contact with the cutting face 10 of its co-operating disc 3 under a pressure sufficient to distort part of the cutting face 10 by an amount sufficient to move the area of contact of the discs 1, 3 away from the outer edge of the cutting face 10. The shaft 5 carrying the discs 3 is adjustable relatively to the shaft 2 carrying the discs 1 to vary the degree of overlap of the co-operating discs. For this purpose, the shaft 5 is mounted in bearings on a plate 18, Fig. 4, secured to a plate 12 which is slidable, by means of differential screw mechanism 23 of known type, in guides 15 secured to a back plate 16 having secured thereto bearings in which the shaft 2 is mounted. A micrometric gauge 27 having its moving arm 28 in contact with the lower edge of the plate 12 enables the amplitude of movement of the plate 12 to be determined. The shaft 2 is driven and the disc 3 of each pair of discs is driven by frictional engagement with the driven disc and/or with the tape being slit. The slit tape is stripped from the discs by means of metal rings loosely mounted between adjacent pairs of discs. Adjacent slit tapes are wound on drums arranged in sets positioned one above the other.
