Class 97(1) [Also in Group XXX] In an automatic tissue processing apparatus for preparing histologic tissue for microscopic examination of the kind having a conveyer which is moved up and down laterally to move a tissue holder into and out of each of a series of liquid receptacles, with a period of dwell of the tissue holder in each receptacle according to the adjustment of a timing device which controls the actuations of the conveyer, and having an electric motor carried by the conveyer and connected to the tissue holder for reciprocating the latter in the liquid receptacles during the immersion periods, there is provided a stirrer which is disposed outside the tissue holder and is movable therewith into and out of the receptacles. The apparatus described is similar to that described in Specification 570,430 and is provided in addition with an electric motor 38 in a housing 36 carried by the conveyer. This motor drives a cam 44 to reciprocate a crank 46 passing through a slot 54 in a rod 56 carrying a tissue holder 13 and is energized when the conveyer is in its lower position to reciprocate the tissue holder during the immersion periods. A stud 62 projects from the lower end of the tissue holder, and has freely mounted thereon an impeller 60 which rotates as the tissue holder oscillates in the liquid. In a modification, the rod 56 extends through the tissue holder and accommodates a flexible shaft which is connected at one end to the shaft of motor 38 and at the other end to an impeller which is rotated by the motor at the same time as the motor reciprocates the tissue holder.
