Abstract
836,672. Automatic voltage-control systems for charging condensers. ROBOTRON CORPORATION. Feb. 20, 1958, No. 5547/58. Class 38 (4). In a stored-energy welder, the voltage across a capacitor 27 is maintained constant when charged by varying the D.C. bias applied to the control grids of a pair of thyratrons 12 and 13 supplying the charging current. The anode of a screen-grid thyratron 36 is supplied with A.C. from a winding 31, the screen grid is biased negatively, and the control grid voltage is derived from a potential divider 32, 33 connected across the discharge capacitor 27. When the voltage across the discharge capacitor exceeds a predetermined value, the screen-grid thyratron conducts, and the anode current flowing through a primary 37 of a transformer 24 induces an E.M.F. in a secondary 23 which rectified and smoothed by a rectifier 26 and a capacitor 21, biases to cut-off the control grids of thyratrons 12 and 13. A grid resistor 22 determines the time constant of the grid circuit of thyratrons 12 and 13, and a potentiometer 44 across a voltage regulator tube 41 adjusts the voltage to which the capacitor 27 is charged. In a further embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), the screen grid 47 is connected to the cathode of the screen grid thyratron and the adjustable tapping 50 on potentiometer 44 is connected to the control grid 39.
