Abstract
The preparation of resins for potting and impregnating electrical apparatus by copolymerizing a monoethylenically unsaturated compound with a urethane derived from the reaction of castor oil with a di-isocyanate which includes the step of adding 2-4 toluylene di-isocyanate to castor oil in such proportions that substantially only half the isocyanate groups can react. The resins are prepared by warming a mixture of a mono-ethylenically unsaturated compound, e.g. styrene and methyl methacrylate, and a heavy metal accelerator; a resin obtained by adding a small proportion of 2.4 toluylene diisocyanate to an excess of castor oil; and a resin obtained by reacting castor oil with an excess of 2.4 toluylene diisocyanate; and a resin obtained by reacting castor oil with an excess of 2.4-toluylene di-isocyanate to react with one half the isocyanate groups. In an example, 100 parts of stabilized styrene containing cobalt naphthenate and chlorinated diphenyl; a resin obtained by adding 5 parts of 2,4-toluylene diisocyanate to 100 parts of castor oil and an antifoam agent, with a solution of ethyl methyl ketone peroxide in di-methyl phthalate; and a resin obtained by adding 100 parts of castor oil to 60 parts of 2.4 toluylene di-isocyanate at below 60 DEG C. are prepared and allowed to stand. When required as a potting composition 20 parts or up to 40 parts of the first resin, pigmented if desired, are mixed with 100 parts of the second resin which may include a filler, and 150 parts of the third resin added, and after potting the composition is polymerized in stages by heating at for example 25 DEG , 60 DEG and 80 DEG C. An impregnating composition may contain a cumene hydroperoxide catalyst accelerated with cobalt naphthenate, and have a final ratio of 20-40 parts of isocyanate, 5 to 25 parts of styrene and 100 parts of castor oil.
