Abstract

836,075. Filling tanks ; venting-apparatus. ELLIOTT, G. H. Nov. 29, 1957 [July 24, 1957], No. 37247/57. Class 21. [Also in Groups XVIII and XXIX] To enable the supply of liquid to a tank to be cut off when the tank is full, the tank is provided with an auxiliary container, receptacle or compartment normally containing air and into which the liquid supplied to the tank can freely flow when the tank is full, the liquid flowing into the auxiliary container, receptacle or compartment causing operation of an audible or visible indicating or signalling device. As shown in Fig. 1, an auxiliary container 4 is provided in the tank 1 adjacent the lower end of a filler pipe 2. A transfer tube 5 connects the pipe 2 and the container 4, a deflector 6 being provided. The container has a vent 7 fitted with a reed 8 which produces a whistling noise when air is driven up the vent 7 from the container. The container 4 communicates with the tank 1 through a hole 9. A needle-valve 10 carried by a float 11 is provided in a cage 12 below the container. In operation fluid is supplied to the tank 1 through the filler pipe 2, the deflector 6 preventing the fluid from flowing into the transfer tube 5. When the level of fluid in the tank rises up to the float 11, the upward movement of the float causes the needle-valve to close the hole 9. If the supply of fluid is further continued, when the tank is quite full, the extra fluid rises in the lower part of the filler pipe 2 and then flows into the transfer tube 5 and thus into the container 4. Flow of fluid into the container 4 causes displacement of air in the container and a whistling noise is produced by the reed 8. When due to consumption the level of fluid in the tank 1 falls below the elevated position of the float 11 the float and needle-valve will descend, thus opening the perforation 9 and allowing fluid to pass from the container 4 into the tank 1. In a modification the container is mounted on top of the tank, the needle valve and float being dispensed with. A small hole in the side of the container leads into the filler pipe and provides a communication between the container and the tank. In a further modification, shown in Fig. 5, the tank 1 is formed with a compartment 16 communicating with the tank through a hole 17. Fig. 9 shows a modification in which the vent tube 7 and its reed 8 are replaced by a vertical shaft 19 fitted with a turbine wheel 20. When the fluid flows down the transfer tube 5 into the container 4 it will act on the turbine wheel 20 and rotate the shaft 19, such rotation being utilized to cause operation of an audible signalling device, such as a small siren.
