tlNlTE FREDERICK WENDLING, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FILLING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented lWar, 21, 19111.
Application filed September 7, 1909. Serial No. 516,333.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK VVENDLING, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of the city of New York, Ridgewood, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Filling Device, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to devices for filling liquids into kegs, barrels and other receptacles, and its object is to provide a new and improved filling device, arranged to give an alarm or shut off the supply of liquid as soon as the receptacle is properly filled.
, For the purpose mentioned the filling tube is removably attached to the receptacle and extends into the same a short distance, and within the said filling tube is arranged a .small vent pipe, opening at its lower end into the receptacle a distance above the bottom of the filling tube, the upper end of the said pipe extending through the wall of the filling tube outside of the receptacle, to connect with a vent chamber having a valvecontrolled outlet, a float and electric contacts of a circuit closer, normally open, and adapted to be closed by the float, the circuit closer being arranged in an electric circuit containing either an alarm or being connected with a stop or other means employed for causing a flow of the liquid through the filling tube into the receptacle to be filled.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which the figure is a sectional side elevation of the filling device as applied.
A keg, barrel or other receptacle A is pro- "vided with a bung-hole A in register with a nipple B secured to the outside of the. receptacle A, and on which screws the union nut C, engaging a shoulder D exteriorly on the filling tube D, the shoulder resting on a rubber washer E seated. on top of the nipple B, so that when the union nut G is-screwed down the filling tube D is securely fastened in place, with the lower ends of the filling tube extending through the nipple B and the bung-hole A into the interior of the receptacle A, as indicated in the drawing. The filling tube D is provided with a valve F under the control of the operator, for shutting off the supply of liquid whenever it is desired to d0 so, the valve F being connected by a plpe G with a. liquid supply,
which may be an overhead storage tank or a pump or other means.
\Vithin the filling tube D is arranged a small vent pipe H, having its lower end H penetrating the wall of the filling tube D to open into the receptacle A a distance above the bottom of the filling tube D. The upper I end H of the vent pipe H extends through the wall of the filling tube D to the outside thereof at a point above the union nut C, and the said upper end H supports a vent chamber 1, provided at the top with an opening I, normally open for the escape of air and adapted to be closed by a ball valve J held in the chamber I. In the wall portion of the. chamber 1 is arranged a float K, provided on top with a block K, of rubber or other insulating material, and adapted to engage one of the flexible contacts L and L of an electric circuit, and attached to the opposite sides of the chamber I by insulating means 0 and O, as indicated in the drawing. The outer ends of the contacts L and L are connected with the circuit wires P and P, leading to an alarm or to other means for stopping the pump or otherwise interrupting the flow of the liquid through the filling tube D into the receptacle A. Normally, the flexible contacts L and L, are out of engagement, as shown in the drawing, but when the float K rises the block K presses the contact L into contact with the other contact L, thus closing the circuit and sounding the alarm or actuating the means for interrupting the flow of the liquid through'the filling tube D. When the several parts are in the position as shown in the drawing, the receptacle A is nearlyfilled, and the lower end H 'of the vent pipe ll is submerged, so that on a further inflow of the liquid through the filling tube D, the
air in the top of the receptacle it iscompressed to such an extent that more of the liquid is forced up the vent pipe H and finally enters the vent chamber 1, thus lifting the float K and causing the same to move the contact L into engagement wlth the contact L, thus closing the circuit forthe purpose above mentioned. When the alarm is sounded, the operator can close the valve 1, to stop the flow of the liquid. The operator next unscrews the union nut C and lifts the filling tube D, with the union nut held thereon. out of engagement with the receptacle, which is now closed at the nipple B by screwing a closing cap thereon.
From the foregoing it will be seen that, by the arrangement described, the filling tube D can be readily secured in place on the receptacle A or removed therefrom after the fillin of thereceptacle is completed. It will also be noticed that the'float K is lifted to close the circuit previous to the receptacle being completely filled, sotha-t when the filling tube D is removed from the receptacle after the supply of liquid is shut off, then the amount of liquid in the filling tube I) readily drains into the receptacle A, to completely fill the same, so that no liquid is wasted.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A device of the character specified, comprising a filling tube, a vent tube within the filling tube, sald vent tube having a lateral opening near the end of the filling tube, said vent tube having a laterally off-set portion at its outer end outside of the filling tube, a float in the laterally off-set. ortionf a signal operating means above the oat for engagement thereb when the float is lifted, and a buoyant va ve for closing .the outer end of the vent tube. 1
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification inthe presence of two subscribing witnesses.
