Abstract

A composition comprises a polyester of terephthalic acid a polyhydric alcohol comprising pentaerythritol or glycerine or mixtures thereof with up to 2 parts by weight of ethylene glycol per part of said alcohol and a metal drier. Specified driers are zinc and cadmium resinate, lead and calcium linoleate and zinc, lead, magnesium, calcium, cobalt and cadmium naphthenate. The compositions may contain phenol-formaldehyde resins, e.g. those derived from phenol, m-cresol, p-cresol, 3,5-xylenol or 2,5-xylenol. The glycerine and/or pentaerythritol are reacted with terephthalic acid or a lower alkyl ester thereof in the presence of cresylic acid and/or naphthol as solvent, optionally in the presence of catalysts, e.g. hydrochloric acid, toluene sulphonic acid, or litharge. The cresylic acid may be in part replaced by a heavy coal tar or petroleum naphtha. In the examples, polyesters made by reacting dimethyl terephthalate and glycerine with or without ethylene glycol in the presence of litharge and cresylic acid are diluted with a cresylic acid-naphtha mixture, mixed with metal driers and used as wire enamels. Further examples describe the preparation of resins from m- and p-cresol and formalin in the presence of triethanolamine and the addition thereof to the compositions of the invention prior to enamelling the wire.
