Abstract

A process for converting fatty oils and fats to obtain gels or thickened oils suitable for use in paint media, comprises treating the fatty oil with an aluminium acylate or a polymer thereof, a polyoxo aluminium alkoxide or phenoxide, an alkoxy- or phenoxy-aluminium acylate or a polymer or condensate thereof, or a polyoxo aluminium alkoxide-phenoxide, at temperatures from atmospheric to 300 DEG C. Aluminium trioctoate, mono- and tri-oleate, ricinoleate, polymerized aluminium oleate, polyoxo-aluminium oleate and tallate, and aluminium tritallate are the compounds used in the examples. Raw or refined linseed oil, rape oil, soybean oil, tung oil, castor oil, hydrogenated castor oil, oiticica oil, coconut oil, palm kernel oil, tallow and lard may be treated, alone or in conjunction with the derived fatty acids, petroleum derived acids, tall oil, aromatic acids and polycarboxylic acids. The reaction mixture may also include rosin acids and esters and modified rosin acids and derived products, coumarone-indene polymers, vinyl polymers such as polyvinyl acetate, styrene monomer, and phenol-formaldehyde resins. When such additives are present, the reaction is preferably carried out at temperatures up to 200 DEG C.; when absent, the preferred temperature is 200-300 DEG C. Softeners specified are paraffinic and aromatic oils; sebacate, phthalate, and phosphate esters; chlorinated diphenyls and waxes; and mineral spirit solvents. Pigments and extenders specified are whiting, china clay, dicolite, barytes, asbestos, silica and silicates, titanium dioxide, lithopone red, white lead, lead sulphate and silicate, zinc oxide, and dyestuffs. Fillers such as wood flour and paint driers such as cobalt and manganese naphthenates may also be present. Specifications 806,113, 809,309 and 825,878 are referred to.ALSO:A process for converting fatty oils and fats to obtain gels or thickened oils suitable for use as rubber processing aids comprises treating the fatty oil with an aluminium acylate or a polymer thereof, a polyoxo aluminium alkoxide or phenoxide, an alkoxy- or phenoxy-aluminium acylate or a polymer or condensate thereof, or a polyoxo aluminium alkoxide-phenoxide, at temperatures from atmospheric to 300 DEG C.
