Abstract

A photopolymerizable composition comprises (1) at least 40% by weight of an alkali-soluble wholly carbon chain polymer having lateral oxyacid groups intermediately linked to chain carbon atoms via wholly carbon chains of 1 to 6 atoms or a water-soluble salt thereof, the polymer or salt being soluble in 1% aqueous ammonia to the extent of at least 5% at room temperature; (2) at least 10% by weight of at least one compatible addition polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated compound which has a boiling point of at least 100 DEG C. at atmospheric pressure and forms with (1) a homogeneous and transparent composition, and (3) polymerization p effective amounts of an addition polymerization initiator activatable by actinic light but thermally inactive at temperatures below 85 DEG C. Acid polymers specified are those of vinyl benzoic acid and alkene- and arene-sulphonic acids and copolymers thereof with other unsaturated monomers. Unsaturated compounds specified are methyl methacrylate, diethylene glycol monoacrylate, N-(beta-hydroxyethyl) methacrylamide, N,N-bis-(beta-hydroxyethyl) acrylamide, beta-methacrylamidoethyl propionate, mixtures of styrene with diethyl fumarate or maleate, esters of vinylbenzoic acid, divinyl terephthalate, divinyl benzene-1,3-disulphonate, divinyl butane-1,4-disulphonate, alpha-vinyl crotonaldehyde and, as preferred monomers, polyunsaturated esters, amides and esteramides of acrylic and methacrylic acids, e.g. triethylene glycol diacrylate and dimethacrylate, tetramethylene diacrylate, methylene bisacrylamide and 1,3-bis (methacrylamidopropoxy) ethane. Polymerization initiators specified are diacetyl, benzil, benzoin, pivaloin, benzoin methyl or ethyl ethers, alpha-methyl, alpha-allyl and beta-phenyl benzoin and azobis(cyclohexanecarbonitrile). Also present in the compositions may be fillers, e.g. silica, bentonites and powdered glass and preformed polymers, e.g. polyvinyl esters and acetals, polymeric glycols and glycol ethers, polyglycerol phthalate or maleate, gelatin, starch, dextrin and casein. The compositions are polymerized by exposure to actinic light and may be used in the manufacture of printing reliefs. Specifications 741,294, 741,441 and 741,470 are referred to.
