A tool-holder comprises a chip-breaker 27 between a clamp 25 and the cutting-tip 22, and a resilient device 28 to press the breaker 27 against the clamp so that it remains in contact therewith when the clamp is released to remove or adjust the tip. The resilient device may be in the form of one or more leaf-springs mounted on the clamp or, as illustrated, a pin 28 pressed outwardly of a passage 30 in the tool-holder by a spring, a shoulder formed by a flat on the pin co-operating with the edge of a seating 23, e.g. of sintered " hard-metal," to prevent escape of the pin. The seating 23 for the tip 22 of square, triangular, circular, &c. form may be adjustable or, as illustrated, secured in the tip-recess by a screw. Ridges, or a lip 37 on the clamp, engages grooves 36 in the breaker 27, which is received in a channel 35 in the clamp, and a forward-lip 38 and rear abutment on the underside of the breaker may bear respectively, on the tip 22 and shank of the tool-holder. Pads at the rear corners of the clamp bear on the shank, and a projection at the forward edge locates in a slot 43 in the shank. A screw 26, preferably with a part-spherical head, secures the clamp to the shank and may be formed with screw-threads of both hands preferably to loosely-engage respectively, screw-threads in the clamp and shank. As illustrated in the modification of Fig. 11, in which a spring-pressed flanged pin 57 acts on the breaker, the part-spherical head of the screw permits the clamp to be tilted by the pin upon release of the clamping pressure. Pressure applied to the end of the breaker disengages the grooves therein from the lip on the clamp, and by means of a rod 45 inserted in a groove or bore in the clamp, the position of the breaker can be varied.
