Abstract

835,454. Drying timber. STUBBER, J. H., ROWLAND, L., and PLESS, J. H. Jan. 24, 1958 [Feb. 8, 1957; July 12, 1957], Nos. 4463/57 and 22194/57. Class 34(2) Timber is seasoned by subjection to intermittent application of radio frequency dielectric heating whilst maintaining control of the rate of evaporation from the timber surfaces. Planks 9, Fig. 1, are dried whilst moving in a circular path on a wire conveyer 1 being alternately subjected to dielectric heating from electrodes 8 and spraying with water or an aqueous solution of sodium chloride, glycol, glycerol or urea from nozzle heads 10. The electric generator 6 is stationary. Heating cycles may be 30 seconds "on" three minutes "off" or one minute "on" one minute "off". In a modified apparatus, the planks are stacked and covered by a silica bonded glass fibre envelope 12, Fig. 3, and evaporation is controlled through a steam vent 13. A steam supply inlet 14 may be provided to aid reduction of surface evaporation rate. In another application, the electrodes 8 are placed within the envelope 12. The timber may be arranged radially in single planks or stacks may be mounted in a closed container in which radially arranged electrodes rotate. The electrodes may be arranged as staggered spaced segments. Alternately, a timber stack may be situated in the gap between electrodes which move up and down past the sides of the stack, or again the timber may be moved whilst the electrodes are stationary. Specification 748,134 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
