Abstract

835,261. Billet piercing; extruding. COMPTOIR INDUSTRIEL D'ETIRAGE ET PROFILAGE DE METAUX. June 8, 1956 [Aug. 24, 1955], No. 17855/56. Class 83 (4). A method of piercing a metal billet 2 comprises drilling a hole 3 in the billet, whilst cold, over at least part of its length to a diameter less than the diameter of the desired bore and having a conical entry portion 4, heating the billet and coating it externally and internally with a vitreous product 8, 9, inserting the billet in the container 1 of an extrusion press and pressing the nose 6 of a punch 7 through the drilled hole to enlarge it to the desired bore whilst permitting the billet metal to flow backwardly. The vitreous product may comprise a glass, oxide, salt or a slag which melts at the working temperature whilst remaining viscous. The exterior of a steel billet may be coated by rolling it along a table covered with glass powder and the interior thereof may be coated with powdered glass inserted with a long spoon. Alternatively or additionally a packet of commercial glass fibres may be introduced into the conical portion of the hole or the latter may be filled with powdered glass whilst the billet is in the container. Specific examples are given for the piercing of billets of 18/8 stainless steel and nickel chrome alloys of given dimensions. The pierced billet may be subsequently extruded in the same press into a tube. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 603,582 and 784,492.
