Abstract
The phosphotungstate of radio-active caesium is converted into a water-soluble salt by bringing an aqueous ammoniacal solution of the phosphotungstate into contact with a strongly basic anion exchange substance, whereby phosphorus and tungsten are adsorbed, separating the solution and neutralizing it with a mineral acid. The anion exchange substance may be prepared by copolymerizing styrene and a divinyl hydrocarbon, treating with an aldehyde and halogen acid, and reacting the haloalkylated copolymer with a tertiary amine as described in Specification 654,706. Caesium phosphotungstate obtained from a solution of uranium fission products as described in Specification 736,429, may be dissolved in sodium hydroxide solution, reprecipitated with sulphuric acid, dissolved in aqueous ammonia and passed through a column of anion exchange resin. The effluent solution is evaporated to reduce the volume, neutralized with sulphuric acid, and evaporated to dryness, the radio-active caesium sulphate being melted into a capsule.
