Abstract

834,996. Electron beam deflecting apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. Oct. 27, 1958 [Oct. 29, 1957], No. 34306/58. Class 39(1). An electron-beam generator, which may be used in the irradiation of materials, includes a longitudinal deflection system comprising two serially-connected opposed conductors mounted in an extension chamber of the generator on opposite sides of or parallel to the axis of this chamber. Preferably, the generator also includes a principal transverse deflection system for deflecting the beam transversely across the conveyer belt 29. The conductors are preferably of stainless steel and may be hollow to enable a cooling medium to be circulated therethrough. Corresponding ends 40, Fig. 3, of the conductors may be electrically connected to the envelope 13 and to each other while the opposite ends 39 are insulated from the envelope and connected across a high frequency oscillator 15, Fig. 1, and a source of cooling fluid 19. Alternatively, corresponding ends of the conductors may be connected to a hollow ring 41, Fig. 4, at diametrally opposed points thereof, while the opposite end 42 of one conductor is electrically connected to the envelope and the opposite end of the other is insulated from the envelope. The conductors are preferably energized with an alternating current having a frequency such that the distance between successive cycles of the longitudinal deflection on an irradiated material is of the order of the diameter of the electron beam, i.e. a frequency of the order of 1000 times the principal transverse scanning frequency. The frequencies of the longitudinal and transverse deflections may be non-harmonically related to one another so that the longitudinal deflection cycles of successive traces are out of phase. As shown, the flared region of the envelope is provided with strengthening fins 21, Fig. 1 and terminates in a thin titanium window 23 which is bowed inwards and is cooled by air from a compressed air source 25.
