Abstract

A corrosion and rust inhibiting composition comprises a predominant amount of a lubricating oil or grease and a small amount (e.g. 0.0125 to 1%) of an amidomonocarboxylic acid or salt <FORM:0834571/III/1> where R1 is a C7-23 aliphatic hydrocarbon radical; R2 is hydrogen or an alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or phenyl radical; R3 is hydrogen or an alkyl radical; n is 0 or 1; and X is hydrogen, a monovalent cation or the equivalent of a polyvalent cation. The oil may be a mineral lubricating oil, any of the non-mineral lubricating oils, e.g. animal and vegetable oils, fats, synthetic polyesters of organic acids, polysiloxanes, polyalkylene glycols, polyolefines and the lubricating compositions used as the medium for the application of rust-preventive additives to metal surfaces. Compounds specified are those where R1CO is stearoyl or lauroyl and the remainder of the molecule is derived from glycine, alpha or beta alanine, sercosine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid or leucine. In examples, they are added to a mineral lubricating oil having a viscosity of 150 S.U.S./100 DEG F.ALSO:Amidomonocarboxylic acids and their salts of the general formula <FORM:0834571/IV (b)/1> where R1 is a C7-23 hydrogen radical, e.g. R1.CO is stearoyl or lauroyl, R2 is H or an alkyl, hydroxyalkyl or phenyl radical, R3 is H or an alkyl radical; n is 0 or 1 and X is H, a monovalent cation or the equivalent of a polyvalent cation are prepared by reacting the appropriate acid chloride R1COCl with the appropriate amino acid, e.g. glycine, alpha or beta alanine, sarcosine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid or leucine.
