Abstract
834,465. Waveguide accessories. NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION. March 11, 1958 [March 18, 1957], No. 8775/57. Class 40 (8). [Also in Group XL (c)] A microwave modulator comprises a waveguide with reduced section 2 and a semiconductor block 3 extending from conductive contact with one wall of the guide to occupy a slot 7 in the opposite wall without conductive contact with the opposite wall and a modulating source 11 applying a signal voltage across the semi-conductor, parallel with the E vector in the guide, to vary its absorption of the electric field, the absorption decreasing as the modulating voltage increases. The semi-conductor block 3 may be secured to the slot edges by mica and the modulation lead 9 secured to a non-injecting N+ region of enhanced conductivity formed on the block. Bulkheads containing liquid dielectric such as silicone oil or carbon tetrachloride may surround the block to cool it, or the liquid may be circulated through a cooling' radiator, or cooling fins secured to the guide adjacent the block. Adjustable stubs in the guide may be provided before and after the block to prevent reflection from the block. Choke-structures may be associated with the slot edges to prevent radiation. The modulation may be a short pulse, the modulator having short time response and wideband characteristics.
