Mattress and like spring assemblies comprising rows of helical springs are compressed and rolled up with a web or webs of tensioned flexible material, the latter preventing entanglement of the springs in adjacent convolutions of the roll. The apparatus shown comprises a winding spindle 10 driven by an electric motor 19 through reduction gearing and a splined coupling and axially movable by an arm 14 which engages a collar 15 and is carried by a nut 16 on a lead screw 17 driven by an electric motor 18. A pressure roller 27 is driven through belt gearing and a slipping clutch 33 by a motor 36 and has its ends mounted in bearings in vertical guides 31. The roller is urged towards the spindle by its own weight and/or springs 32. Webs of paper or hessian 42 pass from supply reels 43 over tensioning and guide rollers 44, 45 and through grooves 40 in the roller 27 and are attached at 46 to the mattress 26 to be rolled, the leading end of the latter being clamped by a bar 25 to the spindle 10. After rolling has been completed by rotation of the spindle and roller, the trailing end of the assembly is tied down to the underlying convolution, the clamping bar is removed and the motor 18 is operated to withdraw the spindle 10 so that the rolled assembly falls on to a tray 51. It may then be wrapped in paper and tied with string, (see Fig. 5, not shown). If more than one assembly is to be rolled, the leading end of the second assembly is tied to the trailing end of the first and so on, so that the assemblies are rolled in succession. The trailing end of each assembly is tied to the underlying convolution. so that successive assemblies may be removed from the outside of the roll without disturbing the inner assemblies.
