Abstract

A polymerization catalyst comprises (1) a Group Ia, IIa, IIb or IIIb metal, (2) a Group Ia, IIa or IIIb alcoholate, and (3) a Group IVa-VIa chlorine-containing compound. Preferred features are: (a) the said metal is Al, the said compound TiCl4 and use is made of an inert organic solvent, e.g. aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aromatic hydrocarbons, as well as halogenated hydrocarbons, octane, cyclohexane, dimethylcyclohexane, decahydronaphthalene, benzene, toluene, xylene and tetrachloroethylene being specified; (b) the catalyst mixture is heated to 50-200 DEG C. prior to polymerization; (c) dry hydrogen halide is led into the catalyst mixture, (d) the said alcoholate is Mg or Al ethylate or Na methylate. Components also mentioned are: (1) Na, Mg, Zn, Cd, (2) Al, butyrate and octylate, (3) Cl3TiOEt, VCl4, CrO2Cl2.ALSO:Ethylene is polymerized (preferably at 70-130 DEG C. and 10-150 atm. and in presence of an inert organic solvent) by means of a catalyst comprising: (a) a Group Ia, IIa, IIb or IIIb metal such as Al; (b) a Group Ia, IIa or IIIb alcoholate such as Na methylate or Mg or Al ethylate; (c) a Group IVa-VIa chlorine-containing compound such as TiCl4 (see Group III). The solvent is preferably octane or decahydronaphthalene, but cyclohexane, dimethylcyclohexane, benzene, toluene, xylene and tetrachloroethylene are also specified. The polyethylene is isolated using water and/or dilute acids (e.g. oxalic acid) and/or alcohols, ethers and ketones. In examples, the products have molecular weights of 40,000-215,000.
