Abstract
833,803. Pneumatic smallarms. KLINE, R. M., and PITCHER, K. R. July 4, 1957, No. 21172/57. Class 119 Pellets 15, Fig. 1, are conveyed from a magazine 16 of a pneumatic smallarm to the barrel by a vertically slidable member 17 having a circular pellet receiving aperture 17a and a small permanent magnet 18 for assisting in drawing the pellet into the aperture and for holding it in place. A chamber 20 for compressed fluid is connected to the barrel by a passage 19 and normally closed valve 24 having a valve stem 24a which is struck by the hammer 34 on pulling the trigger 44 for momentarily opening the valve 24 to supply fluid to propel the pellet, the trigger operating in sequence the vertical movement of the slider 17 and the hammer 34. The hammer 34, which is pivoted at 35, is urged by a spring 36 into contact with the valve stem 24a and has an abutment 43 adapted to be engaged by the end face 42a of a link 42 pivoted at 45 on the trigger 44. The trigger, which is pivoted at 46, has a rearwardly extending lug 60, Fig. 3, entering a slot 17d of the slider 17 and a leaf spring 61 urges the slider 17 upwardly against the action of a trigger spring 47 which normally causes the lug 60 to hold the slider 17 in its lowermost position for receiving a pellet from the magazine. On first pulling the trigger 44, the end face 42a of the link 42 engages the hammer abutment 43 and swings the hammer 34 rearwardly to stress the spring 36 and at the same time the leaf spring 61 moves the slider 17 to its uppermost position to bring a pellet into the barrel. On further pulling of the trigger the lug 60 moves away from the lower surface of the recess 17d, the spring 61 is further stressed and at the same time the hammer abutment 43 rides under the lower end edge of the link surface 42a to permit the hammer to spring forward and strike the valve stem 24a. The compressed fluid chamber 20 is adapted to receive a carbon dioxide cartridge 27 which is pierced by a pin 32 operated by a lever 30 pivoted on a plug 28 sealing the lower end of the chamber 20. A safety device 62, Fig. 6 (not shown) lifts the link 42 so that it does not engage the abutment 43 on pressing the trigger. The tension of the spring 36 may be adjusted so that the pressure of gas in the chamber 20 is balanced by the force exerted on the valve stem 24a by the hammer 34 in its position of rest.
