Abstract

833,712. Electric measuring systems. MULLARD Ltd. Feb. 11, 1958 [March 19, 1957], No. 8979/57. Class 40 (1). [Also in Group XXXIX] Apparatus for determining the speed and direction of rotation of a wheel 2 (Fig. 2) comprises a series of equally spaced permanent magnets 4-7 located on the periphery and two fixed coils L1, L2 wound on magnetic cores whose permeability decreases with an increase in flux, each coil L1, L2 being connected in series with a capacitor C1, C2 (Fig. 3) to form the two parallel branches of a ferro-resonant flip-flop, fed from an A.C. source via a limiting capacitor C3. As each permanent magnet passes the coils the additional flux causes coil L2 to resonate with its series capacitor C2, so that the voltage across C2 rises from a static value, whilst the voltage across capacitor C1 falls in a corresponding manner. These voltages are rectified and compared with a reference voltage applied at B, equal to the static values of the voltage across C1, C2, so that there is no output at terminal X, and a series of pulses at terminal Y whose rate is indicative of the speed of rotation of wheel 2. Rotation in the opposite direction produces pulses at X instead ofY.
