Abstract
Polythene of the type which, on extrusion through a melt-indexer according to A.S.T.M. D1238-57T, but under greatly increased loads, gives a monofil of substantially uniform diameter with a matt surface, is extruded through a slit or tube-forming die, and at least one side of the film or tubing at the point of extrusion is held at a temperature below that required to <PICT:0833092/IV (a)/1> produce clear film. In this way a patterned film, as illustrated, is obtained. The type of polythene required occurs particularly but not exclusively, among "high density" polythenes. Unsuitable polythenes, when tested as above, give a bumpy, twisted monofil of varying diameter. One side of the film or tubing may be held at a temperature between 20 DEG and 80 DEG C. below the minimum temperature at which clear film is obtained. With tubular film the inner surface is preferably maintained at the lower temperature, so as to obtain a patterned inner surface. Film with both surfaces patterned may be obtained if both the lips of the extrusion orifice are held at suitably low temperatures. The film or tubing may be stretched, at least in the extrusion direction, while still in a heatsoftened state, preferably to a ratio of 4 : 1 to 10 : 1. Transverse stretching, if employed, is preferably to a lower draw ratio than in the extrusion direction. The patterned surface obtained is also free from "blocking" (i.e. sticking to an adjacent smooth surface), so that tubular film with a patterned inner surface made in this way is readily opened.
