Abstract

832,853. Stabilizing ships. DA VITDEVELOPMENTS Ltd. Oct. 23, 1958 [Oct. 31, 1957], No. 33950/57. Class 113. To modify rolling and/or pitching there is provided on the ships' hull 2 above the normal water line a relatively fixed baffle device or fin 1 which projects upwards and away from the hull to form a water ballast and buoyancy chamber 4 increasing in volume upwards, an opening or openings 3 permitting ingress and egress of sea water as the chamber submerges and rises. In Figs. 7 and 8 the fins 1 form trough-shaped chambers 4 having an open lower end 5, which chambers may extend round the bow (or stern) as indicated at 6. In Fig. 10 the fin 1 is extended to a cover 1a to trap air in the chamber 4 when the latter is submerged. In Fig. 15, 2a is an inwardly recessed port of the ship's hull 2. In Fig. 13 the chamber 4 is wholly recessed in the hull, the baffle device 1b being continued at 9 to close the top of the chamber.
