In a translator of the kind in which a code to be translated is received as potential markings on a unique combination of code terminals (CT, Fig. 1) which are coupled through a resistance-rectifier gate (e.g. R1, Rfl, Rf2) to a code point (CP1) which is in turn coupled through output isolating rectifiers (RF) to provide markings on those translation terminals (TT) which together pertain to the translation of that code, at least the gate circuit components are mounted on boards 1 (Fig. 2) which are supported in boxes 2, open back and front, each having strung thereon, so as to extend across the front of the box, groups of bare wires D1, D2, D3, each comprising ten wires, corresponding to the ten values of a digit, which constitute at least the code terminals. The boards 1 also carry conductors 8 (Fig. 4) for commoning together one side of those components which relate to the same code point, and terminals 7, respectively, connected to the other side of the components and extending beyond the edge of the boards to protrude between the groups of bare wires for selective connection thereto. The boards 1 are inserted into slots 3 from the back of box 2 and are retained by holding strips 4, whereas the bare wires are secured to terminal post t and are maintained at uniform spacing by combs 5 either provided specifically for this purpose in the box 2 or provided on the front edge of some of the boards 1. In the embodiment described the bare wires constitute the code terminals and the translation terminals. For convenience the components relating to one code point are referred to as those of a translating unit. A typical board 1 (Figs. 3, 4) carries fifteen components 6 belonging to five different translating units each of which has three of its components on this board and the remainder on other boards completing a set. Thus the three components carried by board 1 for each unit could be the three gating components for a three-digit code, or three of the output isolating rectifiers. The fifteen terminals 7 are divided into four groups, of two, five, five, and three terminals respectively, so spaced that when the board 1 is inserted into the box 2, each of the groups of bare wires lies between a different pair of adjacent groups of terminals 7, and each terminal 7 is wired to one side of the corresponding component 6. Considering the terminal and component groups from top to bottom of the board, the last two terminals and components in each group and the first three in the next group belong one to each of the five translating units, the terminals in each set of two plus three being the input or output terminals which pertain in these five units to the particular code ot translation digit to which the group of bare wires which lie between the terminals relates, to which wires the terminals are cross-connected in accordance with the desired values of the digit to which they pertain. The other side of the components 6 relating to each translating unit are commoned to the respective one of five bare conductors 8 on the back of the board 1, these conductors 8 being connected to those of other boards 1 of the set via strapping terminals 9.
