Abstract

832,638. Filters. PATERSON ENGINEERING CO. Ltd. Oct. 11, 1957 [Oct. 23, 1956], No. 32282/56. Class 46. A filter element with which there is used a filter medium deposited on to it from suspension in liquid comprises a rigid former wound helically with positively-spaced turns of a non- metallic thread of material possessing a degree of elasticity such that, at the instant of shock reversal of flow of the liquid, the deposited coating and collected solids are ejected radially outwards by temporary deflection of the turns. Fig. 3 shows in dotted lines the position of a thread 3 when coated with, e.g., diatomite and collected solids during filtration and, in full lines, its position during shock reversal. Such reversal may be effected by sudden expansion of air (trapped during filtration) in the outlet chamber, upon release of air (previously trapped), from the inlet chamber. The thread is preferably a plastic monofil such as nylon, polyethylene, or polyvinyl chloride or. its copolymers. In Fig. 5, a ribbed former 1 is closed at one end by a threaded end-cap 11 and at the other by an intermediate disc 12, and has a tube 8 secured to it. The element is mounted with cap 11 lowermost, filtrate flowing along the ribs into tube 8 and past a cross-centring member 9 to the outlet chamber. The spaces between the ribs 2 are exposed for brushing out by removing tube 8. In Fig. 10, several formers are assembled end to end, the filtrate gaining access to the central space of each former at its end remote from the tube 8. In Fig. 4, (not shown), the formers are perforate and the ribs cannot be exposed at one end for cleaning.
