Abstract

831,689. Soldering. USINES CHAUSSON S.A., DES. June 7, 1956 [June 10, 1955], No. 17645/56. Class 83 (4). In a machine for soldering parts such as upper and lower water boxes on to radiator nests and for soldering pipings on to such parts comprising a succession of carriages connected by an endless driving member to be advanced intermittently along two parallel tracks between which fluxing and soldering devices are arranged, each carriage has a nest carrying movable member, the position of which is successively varied by engagement of the member with fixed elements during the advance of the carriage such that the parts are brought into working relationship with the fluxing and soldering devices, some of which devices are operable simultaneously over both tracks. Two parallel pairs of rails 5, 6, 5a, 6a supported on a framework 1 with the fluxing, soldering, &c. devices between them, form a track for sixteen carriages 9 having grooved wheels 7 and rollers 8 engaging the rails. The carriages are driven step-by-step along the track and over two part-circular plates 10, 11 at the ends of the rails by a chain 23 attached to the carriage by lugs 24, the chain passing over wheels 21, 22 concentric with the plates 10, 11, one wheel 21 being motor-driven. Tables 20, Fig. 4, integral with the wheels 21, 22, carry notched pawls 16 which on rotation of the wheels 21, 22 about fixed cams 18 are moved to engage fingers 13 on the carriages. Each carriage has a base 14 supporting wheels 7, rollers 8 and 12 and the lug 24 and plates 38, 39 on the base pivotally carry rods 45, 46 attached to a cradle 48, 49, 50. A pivoted member 56 carries a pressure-plate 64 to clamp a radiator nest in the cradle and the rod 45 carries a sleeve 68 with spokes 69 to engage stops 70 on the frame 1 for rotating the cradle, a spring-urged rod 73 locking the sleeve in the rotated position. A rod 84 carrying a clamping member 95 is spring-urged upwardly in guides 83, 85 on the carriage and teeth 86 on the rod are engaged by a pawl having a roller 89 for engagement with cams 90 on the frame 1. A finger 96 is provided on the rod to be engaged by cams 97 and 90 on the frame to rotate the rod and the clamp 95 through 90 degrees. In operation with a carriage in position I a radiator nest is placed in the cradle in its horizontal position and is clamped by member 64. In position II the cradle is rotated through 90 degrees and an upper water box is placed on the nest with solid solder stick in a space between a wall of the box and a collector on the nest. In moving from position II to III a cam 97 engages the finger 96 to bring the clamp 95 above the assembly and in position III jets of cold and hot flux are ejected from a device 99 on to the assembly. The carriage is moved into position IV where locating pegs on piston-rods of cylinders on the frame engage holes 33 in the base 14 and heating ranges 105 are lowered to press the bar 84 and hence the clamp 95 on to the work and to effect melting of the solder. In position V a cold air jet is provided and in moving from position V to VI a cam 90 engages the roller 89 to lift the pawl 87 to allow the release of the clamp 95 and engage the finger 96 to turn the clamp 95 from above the work. A stop 70a engages a lever 78 carrying the rod 73 to unlock the cradle and when a stop 70 engages a spoke 69 the cradle is rotated through 180 degrees. In position VI another water box is placed on the nest and clamping, fluxing and soldering takes place in positions VII and VIII and cooling in open air in positions IX and X. The clamp 95 is removed before reaching position XI and a stop 70 engaging the spokes 69 rotates the cradle through 90 degrees into a horizontal position at position XI. At this position upper and lower water-boxes and their tubular bases are mounted on the carriage base 14. At position XII soldering of the bases to the boxes is effected under ranges 115, 116 to be cooled in the open air at position XIII and before reaching position XIV the cradle is rotated through 180 degrees. At position XIV piping is placed on the water boxes soldered to the nest and at XV the piping is soldered by ranges 117, 118. At position XVI cooling is effected in the open air and the finished nest is removed. The boxes to which the tube bases have been soldered are removed and placed on a new nest fitted in the cradle at position I.
