Abstract

831,639. Surface area estimating apparatus. BATAAFSCHE PETROLEUM MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V., DE. April 30, 1958, No. 13761/58. Drawings to Specification. Class 40 (1). A method of estimating the surface area of a solid material comprises passing a stream of a gaseous mixture of an adsorbate and an inert diluent gas over a known quantity of the material at a temperature such that the adsorbate is not adsorbed, then lowering the temperature of the material so that the adsorbate is selectively adsorbed and measuring the amount of gas adsorbed at the lower temperature. The apparatus comprises means for supplying known constant streams of both gases to the sample, means for sensing and recording the concentrations of the gases, and means for adjusting and maintaining the sample at two widely spaced temperatures. Preferably the concentrations of the gases are measured by thermal conductivity cells in the gas streams before and after the sample, the two cells being arranged in a bridge circuit whose output is fed to a recording self-balancing potentiometer. When the sample is cooled or heated the change in composition of the gas flowing through the second cell unbalances the bridge circuit which unbalance is recorded by the potentiometer over a period of time as a peak on the recorder trace. The area under the peak, measured by a planimeter, is a measure of the gas adsorbed or desorbed by the sample under test, and therefore of the surface area of the sample.
