Abstract
831,416. Hop harvesters. KIBINGER, F., and EDER, H. June 30, 1958 [June 28, 1957 ; March 8, 1958], No. 20908/58. Class 6(3). Apparatus for separating hops from their branches comprises one or more movably mounted cutting tools 15 shielded by gratings 6 arranged to prevent the hops from being damaged by the cutters. The cutters 15 are carried by shafts 10 supported rotatably in spaced discs 1, 4, each shaft 10 preferably carrying several cutters 15 each associated with a grating 6 consisting of two wires 8, 9 provided with deflecting rods 11 and joined at their ends to stays 3 which rigidly connect the discs 1, 4. Each of the discs 1, 4 is mounted on a bearing 2<SP>1</SP> rotatable on a fixed shaft 2, and the unit formed by members 1, 3 and 4 may be rotated manually by a crank drive or by a motor through gears, chain or belt drive. Each alternate shaft 10 carries rigidly either an upper pulley 16 or a lower pulley 16<SP>1</SP>, and all but two of shafts 10 also carry rotatably guide rollers 17 or 17<SP>1</SP> respectively. A pair of endless belts 19, 19<SP>1</SP> are wound round the pulleys and guide rollers, as shown, and round pulleys 18, 18<SP>1</SP> respectively which are rigid on the shaft 2. When the unit formed by members 1, 3 and 4 is rotated all shafts 10 will rotate in the same direction. The shafts 10 may be driven through gear wheels and an endless chain. Rods 20 on the shafts 10 stop the mechanism from becoming clogged. Branches carrying hops, which are fed into the chamber bounded by the gratings 6, are thrown outwards by centrifugal force so that the cutters 15 sever the hops, all the severed material then passing out between the gratings 6 against the inner wall of a stationary hopper (not shown), which surrounds the rotary mechanism, and down through an opening in the lower end of the hopper to a sorting mechanism. A cylindrical cover (not shown) encloses the area between discs 1 and 4 ; and shaft 2 has a conical cover 5. The cutters 15 may have saw blades.
