[Also . in Groups XIX, XXIX and XXXV] Apparatus for the measurement of a force produced in an enclosed space comprises a movable inner member 19 on which the force acts, a movable outer member 25 separate from the member 19, a magnetic coupling 23, 24 and means 28, 29 for applying a compensating force to the outer member 25 to oppose displacement of the inner member 19, and means 30 for measuring the size of the compensating force. As shown, the force produced is due to the pressure differential of fluid flowing past an orifice 18, and acts on a diaphragm 19. The outer member 25 has one arm forming part of an inductive pick-up 26, the current from which is fed through an amplifier 27 to a fixed coil 29 and to a coil 28 mounted on another arm of the member 25. These coils 28, 29 set up a compensating force opposing the force on the diaphragm 19 and tending to restore the member 25 to the position it assumes when there is no force on the diaphragm. The current in the coils 28, 29 is a measure of the compensating force and hence of the force acting on the diaphragm which is a measure of the rate of flow of the fluid. In another embodiment, two magnetic couplings are used, the outer member being in two distinct parts, corresponding to the two arms of the member 25. The principle of operation is similar, the movement of the pick-up 26 being initiated through one coupling and the compensating force applied to the inner member through the other coupling.
