Abstract

831,240. Electrostatic separation; concentrating ores. INTERNATIONAL MINERALS & CHEMICAL CORPORATION. Aug. 26, 1957 [Sept. 26, 1956], Nov. 26817/57. Classes 82(1) and 117 A method of separating relatively non- conducting materials such as ore particles, comprises suspending selectively charged particles of the materials in a gaseous stream flowing vertically upwards between electrodes so that particles of like electric charge accumulate adjacent the electrode of opposite charge and are there collected In the apparatus shown in Fig. 1 a circular duct 10 is provided with a porous member 11 above an air inlet 12. Powdered material to be treated is fed on to the porous member from a hopper 15 and is fluidized by air rising through the porous member. The suspended, charged particles come under the influence of the electric field between electrodes 13 and 14 and are thus separated according to their charge. The fluidizing gas stream is preferably heated, e.g. in the range 90‹F.-500‹F. for separating phosphate or silica or 850‹F. when treating sylvinite. The use of a heated gaseous stream is preferred when materials containing excess moisture are treated. The voltage acoss the electrodes may be such as to provide a field gradient of 1000-15,000 volts per inch. The concentration of phosphate ore having a particle size in the range 14-200 mesh is referred to using a field gradient of 3000- 15000 volts per inch, also the separation of sylvinite into its components, the ore having a particle size 28-150 mesh and being treated at a temperature above 200‹F. using a field gradient of 1500 volts per inch. Other gases such as nitrogen, carbon dioxide or helium may be used as fluidizing media instead of air. In the modification shown in Fig. 3 the treatment chamber is of rectangular horizontal crosssection and two opposite side walls diverge upwardly to give the chamber a larger cross-sectional area at its upper end reducing the speed of particles carried upwardly by the gas stream. Baffles 37, situated in the gas inlet, and 38 and 39, between the electrodes, serve to minimize turbulence of the gas stream Particles attracted to the electrodes 32 and 30 are diverted over wedge-shaped baffles 44 and 45 to their respective receptacles.
